Devil’s Lake State Park

Devil’s Lake State Park, in Baraboo, Wisconsin, is the state’s most popular state park, drawing nearly 3 million annual visitors. Encompassing over 10,000 acres, Devil’s Lake is part of over 27,000 acres of public recreational land in Sauk County. The park, also known as “Tee Wakącąk”, meaning Holy or Sacred Lake, is situated on ancestral Ho-Chunk land and contains ancient effigy mounds that are part of their cultural heritage.

Pewit’s Nest State Park

Pewit’s (sometimes known as “Peewee’s” nest) is a natural gorge cut by a small stream called Skillet Creek. It is similar in many ways to the more well-known Parfrey’s Glen to the southeast of Devil’s Lake State Park. Pewits is between 30 and 40 feet deep. The walking trail leads to the mouth of the gorge as well as a lookout area on top of the cliffs.

Parfrey’s Glen State Park

At its uppermost part, the glen reaches a depth of nearly 100 feet and embraces a mountain-type stream flowing through its floor. The Glen’s walls are sandstone embedded with pebbles and boulders of quartzite. This quartzite is conglomerate, sometimes called a “plum pudding” stone. The sandstone layers represent ancient sandy beach. Because the glen is home to a variety of threatened plants and insects, visitors must stay on the trail from the lower parking area to the top of the glen and retrace their steps back. The path is about 0.8 miles long.

Rocky Arbor State Park

Rocky Arbor State Park is a small 244 acre park 1.5 miles north of Wisconsin Dells. The park offers wooded campsites, a 1 mile hiking trail and picnic and playground area. The park is in an attractive setting by pine trees and sandstone bluffs. Hikers and campers will hear traffic from the interstate highway, most noticeable when the leaves are off of the trees. The small park is managed by Mirror Lake State Park.

Natural Bridge State Park

Natural Bridge State Park was established in 1973. It totals about 530 acres, including a 60-acre scientific area. The main attraction of the park is the large sandstone arch or “bridge”. The top of the arch stands about 35 feet tall. The opening in the bridge is 25 feet high by 35 feet wide. The formation, which is similar to those seen out west at Arches National Park in Utah, survived the last ice age in Wisconsin’s Driftless Area. However, unlike the arches out west, this one is hidden in a thick forest cover. Directly under the bridge is a rock shelter used by native people over 10,000 years ago. Most references today call this the Raddatz rock shelter after a family who owned the land before it became a park.

The year was 1943, and Jim and Alice Wimmer decided to take a big risk, buying a small existing roadside restaurant known for its char-broiled steaks. How fitting that in 2018, the restaurant’s 75th anniversary year, the third generation of Wimmers, Amy Wimmer, takes the helm from her father Jeff and his wife Jane, bringing her own adventurous spirit to the Del-Bar, the same kind of spirit she so admired in her grandparents.

Virtually all of Fawn Creek wines are made from grapes  harvested in Lodi, California, but they are all fermented, created and  bottled on-site. In addition to offering traditional semi-dry table reds and semi-sweet to sweet table whites, we have found a niche in fruit-flavored grape wines of a sweeter nature such as Granny’s Gold, a Granny Smith-apple-flavored Riesling, and Razz Prairie, a raspberry-flavored Pinot Noir.
